二、导思:

Go through Bill Gates’ words under the topic “Living with technology”. It reads “The advance of technology is based on making it fit in so that you don’t really even notice it, so it’s part of everyday life.” What does it mean?

What Gates says is about the relationship between technology and life. He emphasizes that technology sneaks into our lives and brings us benefits.

2. In lines 44-46, Stephen Hawking is quoted as saying, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

No.I don’t agree with Stephen Hawking. I think that scientists fully understand the concerns about AI, and they will surely be careful about developing it. Even if we are able to create true artificial intelligence, we will know how to control it.

Yes.I agree with Stephen Hawking. With the development of full artificial intelligence, machines may become so intelligent that human beings could no longer control them.

3. What do you think intelligent machines will be capable of doing in the future?

Intelligent machines will certainly have a lot of influence on our lives in the future.

Step 4  Language points

此处为but连接的并列复合句。but后的分句句子主干为“such dreams may come true”, given构成的介词短语中含有 介词+关系代词引导的定语从句 “at which artificial intelligence, or AI, is being developed”修饰先行词rate

                    adj. 规定的;指定的,所述的(常做前置定语)

常见搭配:given that从句 鉴于/考虑到......(常在句子做状语

2. One of the essential aims of AI is to develop computer intelligence capable of learning from experience, adjusting to new inputs and performing tasks like humans.

AI的基本目标之一,是开发能够学习过往经验、适应新的输入内容并且能够像人类一样执行任务的计算机智能。

此处不定式短语 “to develop... like humans”做表语。其中的形容词短语 “capable of... like humans做后置定语修饰 “computer intelligence”,介词of后跟了三个v-ing短语learning from experience, adjusting to inputperforming tasks作介词宾语。

3. Years before the term “artificial intelligence” was corned in a mid-1950s, the theory

早在 人工智能这个词在20世纪50年代中期被创造出来的许多年前,计算机科学领域的先驱之一艾伦图灵就已探索了人工智能理论。

此处主句用了过去完成时 “had been exploded”。此处的“one of the pioneers in the field of computer science”Alan Turing的同位语。

4. As we become more and more dependent on computers, some scientist are urging us to think about the dangers posed by the advances in AI.
