Step2 listening transcript

Newscaster: Short-sightedness is a common problem among Chinese students. It refers to the inability to see objects at a distance clearly. These days more and more Chinese students are affected by short-sightedness, increasingly at a younger age.

According to a national survey of students health, the percentage of Chinese primary school students who suffer from short-sightedness is thirty six per cent. Among junior high school students, the number increases to seventy-one point six per cent, and as for senior high school students, eighty-one per cent of them need to wear glasses. These high figures worry both teachers and parents. Short-sightedness can have a significant effect on students. It can make it inconvenient for them to play certain sports, such as basketball and swimming. In some cases, it may even give rise to other eye problems.

What causes short-sightedness has not been fully understood. It is commonly believed that people whose parents are short-sighted are more likely to suffer from the condition. However, how people use their eyes may be a key factor: Individuals who spend a large amount of time reading, working at a computer, focusing on a smartphone screen or doing other close work are at higher risk of developing short-sightedness. These activities become even more dangerous when coupled with poor lighting or bad reading habits such as reading in bed. Spending too little time outdoors can also cause the problem.

Students with short-sightedness may look at things with their eyes partly shut or move closer to objects to see clearly. Sometimes they may complain of tired eyes and headaches. These are all signs of short-sightedness.

Step3 Reading

Read the feature article on page 37 and make a list of the measures taken by No.9 High School.

Measures taken by No. 9 High School to protect students' eyes

1

Ensuring that students' eyes get regular breaks throughout the day: stopping for a few minutes in the middle of their study and looking at distant objects; going outdoors and enjoying themselves in the sun

2

Providing students with an eye-friendly environment: adjusting all the lights to make sure the classrooms are well lit; placing computers in the computer room at least 50 centimetres away from students; equipping the library with new chairs that can be adjusted to ensure the best sitting position

3

Making everyone aware of the ways to improve eye health: sending out information advising all parents on how to protect their children's eyes; training students to recognize signs of eyesight problems

Step 4  Writing

Write an article on short-sightedness among Chinese students. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you.

Sample

A recent survey has revealed that short-sightedness is on the rise among Chinese students. The problem has already affected a large number of students: 36% of primary school students, more than 70% of junior high students and over 80% of senior high students suffer from short-sightedness.

What causes short-sightedness is not fully understood, although children may be at greater risk if their parents have the condition. How we actually use our eyes seems to play a decisive role. For example, activities like focusing on a screen, whether that be a computer, television or smartphone, are tough on our eyes. Reading in poor light can also harm our eyesight. It is also harmful to spend too much time indoors, as our eyes need natural sunlight to be healthy.

Luckily, the situation could be improved if we take measures to stop ourselves becoming short-sighted in the first place. We should take regular breaks from our study and go outside to give our eyes a chance to get some sunlight. We should also avoid sitting too close to a computer, smartphone or television screen. In addition, we should ensure proper lighting whenever we read, so that our eyes do not need to work too hard.

However, if we do become short-sighted, it is necessary to see an eye doctor and get glasses. It is my belief that with these measures, our eye health would be greatly improved.
