Narrator:     Sir Bobby Charlton was born in England on 11 October 1937. He began playing football as a young child and he is known today as one of England's greatest players. But Bobby's career was not without setbacks. When he was 20 years old, his team was on their way home from a successful competition in the European Cup when their plane crashed. Eight of the players died in the accident, including Bobby's best friend. Bobby was overcome with sorrow but he returned to the game less than a month later because he felt that was what his team would have wanted. Together with his coach, he helped rebuild the team over the next few years. Ten years after the crash, Bobby and his team won the European Cup. However, he did not attend the post- match celebrations. He preferred to be alone to remember his former teammates who died in the air crash a decade earlier.

During his football career, Sir Bobby Charlton made 758 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 249 goals. He also scored 49 goals for England. He was well known for his ability to control the midfield and to deliver striking blows and long-range shots with either foot. His determination, strong willpower, fitness and hard work brought him great success in his career.

As one of the leading players in the history of football, his achievements cover an impressive list of medals and titles. He has earned many honours including some of Europe's highest athletic awards, as well as lifetime achievement awards. It is said that champions are not made in the gym or on the field but in the heart. That is certainly true of Sir Bobby Charlton. He always says,“Do your absolute best. You can't do anymore.”

Learning about the structure

When writing an article about sportsmanship, you can follow the structure below:

Develop the body of your essay by giving your understanding of sportsmanship in detail. Use examples to support your opinion where necessary. You can also include an opposing opinion and state why you disagree.
