Step 1 Pre-reading

Have students watch a short video and answer the following questions in class.

l What types of mess media do you usually rely on for information and entertainment?

l Do you believe everything you read in a news report? Why or Why not?

Step 2 While-reading

1. Have students skim the two news reports and an article for general idea..

(1) What is the two news reports about?

(2) Why are the two news reports on the same topic but the different titles?

2. Have students read them carefully, then complete the tables below.

Step 3 Critical-reading

Have students read the two news and the article again carefully and answer the following questions.

1. How long did it take the firefighters to get the situation under control according to the first news reports?

2. How did Lisa feel about the fire according to the second news reports?

3. What should we not do when we come across factual differences in different news reports?

4. What may different journalists do when an estimate of number is given?

Step 4 Creative-reading
