“真可惜呀,埃丽诺,”玛丽安说,“爱德华竟然不爱好绘画。”

"Notastefordrawing!"repliedElinor, "whyshouldyouthinkso?Hedoesnotdrawhimself,indeed,buthehasgreatpleasureinseeingtheperformancesofotherpeople,andIassureyouheisbynomeansdeficientinnaturaltaste,thoughhehasnothadopportunitiesofimprovingit.Hadheeverbeeninthewayoflearning,Ithinkhewouldhavedrawnverywell.Hedistrustshisownjudgmentinsuchmatterssomuch,thatheisalwaysunwillingtogivehisopiniononanypicture;buthehasaninnateproprietyandsimplicityoftaste,whichingeneraldirecthimperfectlyright."

“不爱好绘画?”埃丽诺答道。“你怎么能这样看?的确,他自己不画,可是他很喜欢看别人画。我敢向你担保,他决不缺乏天资,只不过是没有机会深造罢了。他要是一步步地学下来,我想会画得很出色的。他不大相信自己这方面的鉴赏力,总是不愿意对任何画儿发表意见。不过,他先天就有一种恰当而纯朴的鉴赏力,使他一般都很明断。”

Mariannewasafraidofoffending,andsaidnomoreonthesubject;butthekindofapprobationwhichElinordescribedasexcitedinhimbythedrawingsofotherpeople,wasveryfarfromthatrapturousdelight,which,inheropinion,couldalonebecalledtaste.Yet,thoughsmilingwithinherselfatthemistake,shehonouredhersisterforthatblindpartialitytoEdwardwhichproducedit.

玛丽安唯恐惹姐姐生气,便不再往下说了。不过,埃丽诺说他赞赏别人的绘画,可是这种赞赏远远没有达到如醉如痴的程度,在她看来,只有达到如醉如痴的程度才能称得上真正具有鉴赏力。姐姐的错误使她暗自发笑。然而,她又佩服姐姐对爱德华的盲目偏爱,正是这种盲目偏爱才导致了那个错误。

“玛丽安,”埃丽诺继续说道,“我希望你不要认为他缺乏一般的鉴赏力。其实,我也许应该说你不会有那种看法,因为你待他十分热诚。如果你真有那种看法的话,你肯定不会对他那么彬彬有礼。”

Mariannehardlyknewwhattosay.Shewouldnotwoundthefeelingsofhersisteronanyaccount,andyettosaywhatshedidnotbelievewasimpossible.Atlengthshereplied:

玛丽安简直不知说什么好。她无论如何也不想伤害姐姐的感情,然而又不能说些言不由衷的话。最后她回答说:

"Donotbeoffended,Elinor,ifmypraiseofhimisnotineverythingequaltoyoursenseofhismerits.Ihavenothadsomanyopportunitiesofestimatingtheminuterpropensitiesofhismind,hisinclinationsandtastes,asyouhave;butIhavethehighestopinionintheworldofhisgoodnessandsense.Ithinkhimeverythingthatisworthyandamiable. "

“埃丽诺,要是我对他的称赞与你对他优点的认识不尽一致,请你不要生气。我不像你那样,有那么多机会去揣摩他在意向、爱好和情趣方面的细微的倾向;但是,我极其佩服他的德行和理智。我觉得他可敬可亲极了。”
