Scene One

The story of Romeo and Juliet happened in Italy. Romeo, one of the Montagues, and Juliet, one of the Capulets despite the vendetta between the two families they fell in love regardless, even before they had been aware of each other’s background. With Laurence’s help, they secretly

got married. Later, in order to help his friend, Romeo killed Juliet’s

cousin , so he had to flee away. And Juliet by her parent’s arrangement was forced to marry Paris , who was the relative of the Prince . But Juliet

wouldn’t marry anyone else, and with the help of Laurence , she took

poison and pretended to die. Unluckily, Romeo took the rumor that Juliet

had died. Meanwhile, Paris, who had planned to marry Juliet before , went

to Juliet"s tomb. Here is the following story.

［Curtain opens.

A churchyard；in it a tomb belonging to the Capulets．］

［Enter PARIS，and his Page bearing flowers and a torch］

PARIS

Give me your torch，boy .Yet put it out，for I would not like to be seen. You, there, lie down, under the tree and hold your ear close to the ground；If someone comes, you shall hear it：whistle then to me，As a signal that you’ve heard something approaching．Give me those flowers．Do as I tell you，go．

PAGE

［Aside］I am almost afraid to stand alone here in the churchyard；yet I will adventure．

［Retires］

［The Page whistles］

PARIS

The boy gives warning that someone is approaching．Who wanders here tonight , to cross my condolence？What ? With a torch！I’ll step aside and watch．

［Retires］

［Enter ROMEO and BALTHASAR，with a torch, a letter and a spade.］

ROMEO

Give me that spade．Hold，take this letter；early in the morning. You go and deliver it to my father. No matter what you see or hear，stand at a distance，And do not disturb me in the course．

BALTHASAR

I will go，sir，and I won’t trouble you．

ROMEO

That’s it．Take you that . Live，and be prosperous. And farewell，good fellow．

BALTHASAR

［Aside］Anyway，I"ll hide myself nearby：I fear his looks，and I doubt his intention．

［Retires］

ROMEO

You , the hateful death, has taken my beloved away from me. I’ll enforce you to open your mouth and feed you to your appetite.

［Opens the tomb］

PARIS

This is that banished arrogant Montague，who has murdered my love"s cousin. It is supposed，the pitiful person died because of the grief. And here he is coming to do something shameful to the dead bodies. I will catch him．

［Comes forward］

Stop what you’re doing，evil Montague！Can revenge be sought further than death？You damned murderer , obey，and go with me, for you must die．

ROMEO

I must indeed；and therefore I came．Good gentle youth，don’t try to tempt a desperate man. Leave me immediately .Think about these who have gone. Don’t make me angry , youth，and don’t bother me .Stay away if you want to live. I swear I love you better than myself.

PARIS

I don’t need to believe your nonsense . Anyway I will arrest you.

ROMEO

Do you have to provoke me？Then come and fight，boy！

［Fight］

PAGE

Oh Lord，they fight！I will go and call the guard．

［Exit］

PARIS

Oh，I am dying！

［Falls］

If you are merciful，Open the tomb，lay me with Juliet．

［Dies］

ROMEO

In faith，I will．Let me have a look at this face． Ah, it’s Paris, who wanted to marry Juliet before. Please forgive me, Paris．

［Laying PARIS in the tomb］

Oh, my love, my Juliet! Death has kissed you , but you are still beautiful. I will also stay here, but let me hold you in my arms. I love you. I will die with you.

［Drinks］

The drug is quick. With a kiss, I die．

［Dies］

［Enter，at the other end of the churchyard，FRIARLAURENCE，with a lantern，crow，and spade］

FRIAR LAURENCE

I can see a light in the tomb. Who is over there, Balthasar?

BALTHASAR

It’s my master, Romeo.

FRIAR LAURENCE

I must go to him. I fear that something unlucky may happen.

［Enters the tomb］

Romeo！Oh，Romeo！What，Paris too？Blood everywhere!Ah，what a tragedy!

［JULIET wakes］

JULIET

Oh, kind friar！Where is my husband？I do remember well where I should be，and there I am．Where is my Romeo？

［Noise within］

FRIAR LAURENCE

I have heard some noise．Lady，leave here at once. Our plan has been ruined. Your husband lies there dead； Come，go，for the guard is coming , good Juliet，

［Noise again］

I no longer dare to stay．

JULIET

You , go quickly，and I will not be away．

［Exit FRIAR LAURENCE］

What"s here？It must be poison that has ended your life . Oh , didn’t you leave some to me , so that I can drink?

［Kisses him］

First Watchman

Lead，boy：which way？

JULIET

Ah , there’s someone coming . Then I"ll be brief．

［Snatching ROMEO"s dagger ,stabs herself］

Let me die．

［Falls on ROMEO"s body，and dies］

［Enter Watch，with the Page of PARIS］

PAGE

This is the place , where the torch is burning.

First Watchman

Oh! What a miserable sight! Here lies Juliet , bleeding , warm , and newly dead. Go quickly to tell the Prince , the Capulets and the Montagues.

［Re-enter some of the Watch，with BALTHASAR］

［Enter the PRINCE and Attendants］

PRINCE

What’s the misfortune that has waken me up so early?

［Enter CAPULET，LADY CAPULET，and others］

First Watchman

Sire，here lies Paris and Romeo dead；also Juliet，dead before，now warm and newly killed．

First Watchman

Here is a friar，and a dead servant；they have equipment with them to open the tomb.

CAPULET

Oh heavens！Oh, wife，look how our daughter bleeds！

LADY CAPULET

Oh！This sight of death is as a bell，striking my heart.

［Enter MONTAGUE and others］

PRINCE

Come，Montague , to see your son．He has died.

MONTAGUE

Oh , my son , how can you leave the world before my death?

PRINCE

Seal up your grief for a while，and let me briefly look into the case.

［Turn towards the friar］

Say whatever you know about it.

FRIAR LAURENCE

It is all a mistake , a terrible mistake . Romeo and Juliet loved each other and I helped them get married secretly . Now they are both dead.

［Quiet］

PRINCE

［Sigh］

My friends Mercutio and Paris are killed . Tybalt is dead , and so do Romeo and Juliet . All these is an awful tragedy for our city ,

indeed , a terrible tragedy.

ALL

A glooming peace this morning with it brings；

The sun，for sorrow，will not show his head：

Go hence，to have more talk of these sad things；

Some shall be pardoned，and some punished,

For never was a story of more woe

Than this of Juliet and her Romeo．

［Exeunt］
