China released its 7th national census on May 11. Navchaa Suren, representative ad interim of the United Nations Population Fund in China, said China should and could create conditions to turn the challenges into opportunities.
First, the census results will guide China"s policies in the next stage. Second, China"s population is still increasing albeit at a low rate. Last, since low fertility and aging of the population will continue, China needs to figure out ways to substantively support fertility decisions and secure the quality of life for the elders. Suren said China has potential to realize the goals. |
